A scandalous yet soulful feast for the ears. Hérodiade: An Opera in Concert
Lyric premiere
A rarely heard gem of French grand opera receives its long-awaited first performance at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Jules Massenet’s take on the Biblical story of Salomé, inspired by Gustave Flaubert’s literary retelling, brings a surprisingly introspective flair to this dark drama of jealousy and obsession.
Lyric Music Director Enrique Mazzola leads a concert production that highlights a lush score filled with haunting choral chants, sultry dances, and Hollywood-esque evocations of first-century Jerusalem.
A quintet of all-star soloists explore Hérodiade’s richly complex characters through an abundance of soaring arias, from Salomé’s “Il est doux, il est bon” to Hérode’s “Vision fugitive.”
- Language: Sung in French with projected English titles
